The Bird Can't Fly plot

Melody, the bossy chef of a hectic kitchen, receives the bad news that her only child, June, has died. She decides to return to her hometown of Fairlands for her daughter's funeral. Upon arrival, the once prosperous mining town appears to have been completely swallowed by the advancing desert sands. Even the imposing Paradise Hotel where Melody used to work in the kitchen has completely disappeared under the sand. Many residents have left the city. Only a small group of quirky miner's wives with their children live in a few surviving houses on the main street, while their husbands work far away in the mine.
