Sunfish (& Other Stories on Green Lake) plot
During a summer in Green Lake, Michigan, several characters reach major turning points in their lives. The stories are about: 1) A 14-year-old girl, Lu, is brought to her grandparents’ lake house for her honeymoon by her newlywed mother. Feeling lonely and displaying some serious teenage angst, she becomes interested in sailing on her grandfather’s boat, the Sunfish. 2) Jun, a lonely teen, works her butt off to become “First Chair” at a summer music camp for gifted students. 3) Meanwhile, at the local bar, a fisherman finds an unlikely ally in catching the big fish that will change his life. 4) Finally, two close-knit sisters, Robin and Blue Jay, run a bed-and-breakfast inn while their father works, trying to make their last days of summer worthwhile before Robin leaves for college.

A delightful film in which four little stories find their place beautifully. The actual protagonist is the lake itself, never overtly present but always placed in the background. She provides the overarching atmosphere, ensuring the four stories flow well into one another and benefit from the already established summery languor.
All four parts have been kept small; only the third story likely features a bit more action, but it fits well in that spot by picking up the pace after 40 minutes of gentle meandering, only to shift back down a gear in the sweet fourth story. But always by, around, or on the lake.
And there, four stories unfold, just like countless others. And all four give a certain picture of the life of ordinary people. Exactly the kind of film I like. 4.0*.

The film consists of four short and all interesting stories, and it is somewhat difficult to find the common thread in these stories, but it has to do with a transformation, stepping over the threshold where, despite the difficulty, a certainty surfaces that things will turn out well. And that they all take place around or on the same lake in the summer (just as the summer holidays themselves are the transition between two phases of life), where the water itself seems to solve the problems, as if life were a Taoist current on which you can and must let yourself be carried along. It is a bittersweet but above all beautiful, warm film. It is also Sierra Falconer's first feature film, and I am already looking forward to her next film.
