In the 1920s, Irish Studs Lonigan grew up in Chicago's notoriously poor "South Side" neighborhood. When Studs moves from primary to secondary school, a whole new world opens up for him. A world of fighting, drinking and partying. Studs gets married in 1929, but he hates this married life more and more. Even when the 1930s begin, he tries to be strong to survive, but Studs also cannot escape the economic recession.
