New York, 1931. Young Isabelle Perry from Mississippi is fed up with her adulterous and hot-tempered Jersey fiancée Henry Greene. Isabelle falls for the roguish Italian count and singer Gus Di Ruvo. Gus has a bad reputation and his interest in Isabelle is purely physical. Given the bad experiences with her past relationships, Isabelle is determined to put up with Gus, but only on her terms and that includes marriage. Gus, impressed by Isabelle's iron will, agrees to a marriage and tells himself that he is doing it to save Isabelle's reputation.
