Two 8-year-old boys meet in the summer of 1970 in Chicago. Although their backgrounds are very different, they become friends. Danny, the son of a rabbi, is Jewish and Pete is Catholic. When Danny turns out to be seriously ill, Pete promises to help him get to heaven. For this, according to Pete, Danny has to repent and both parents are quite against that. Yet the boys persevere despite the disastrous consequences they unleash...
