Nice film with these two top actors. It certainly couldn't be wrong, although I have seen some better roles from them. The plot seemed a bit dated to me and it was not original anyway. This turned out to be director Martin Ritt's last film. Still, this film gets a small 3.0.

Reasonable film in which a woman teaches an illiterate chef to read and write. A love film with a leisurely pace that is about real people. It's all very simple, and the characters also have little depth. However, Jane Fonda and Robert DeNiro manage to get a little more out of this, making the film still watchable and giving it a narrow 3.5 stars.

I can still handle the story, but the casting of De Niro is really a huge mistake. With all the hype at the time about his method acting, this role comes out very mediocre, and you wonder what director Martin Ritt must have set in motion to still get the most out of it. While at the same time Jane Fonda does, and apparently without any effort, manage to portray a credible role. It is not really a particularly difficult script with unfathomable emotions or something like that.

So let me leave it at that - a reasonable film that without De Niro might have been good or even very good. But it wasn't. Too bad.

What also really rubs me the wrong way is the ultra-American fairy tale that if you just do your best and 'work hard' everything will turn out fine. That was once, perhaps, but not for people like us.
