"Balgandharva (Marathi: बालगंधर्व) is a biographical Marathi film on one of the Marathi singers and stage actors Narayan Shripad Rajhans, famously known as Balgandharva (Bal=child + Gandharva=Singer of Heaven)."

Narayan Shripad Rajhans, better known as Bal Gandharva (1888-1967), was one of the most famous Marathi singers and actors. He was known for his roles of female characters as women were not allowed on stage in his day. He led a tumultuous life as he witnessed India's struggle for independence, had an affair with a Muslim singer (he was Hindu) and also involved the fluctuating patronage of the Maharajas. When cinema made its appearance, it became inevitable that his services for female roles were no longer requested.
