Lakshmi is an extraordinary 13-year-old Nepali girl. Her father accepts an advance for her because she is going to work as a domestic servant in Kolkata in India. Believing that she will earn enough money to buy a new roof for her mother, she travels with her 'aunt' Bimla to 'Happiness House'. The residence is ruled by Madam Mumtaz.
