"Mystery" is the perfect name.
I had no idea where the story was going, and really didn't see the ending coming.
Now that I know how it worked, I do think there were a few clues I missed.

Entertaining, with beautiful Parisian locations and a good cast.
It is very good for the atmosphere of the film that much of the dialogue is entirely in French.
They are not subtitled on the UK DVD I have (but fortunately I could understand them).

I have always found Jean Simmons to be a peculiar actress.

What did bother me, however, is a plot hole concerning a hotel maid who knows too much and dies.
That was not mentioned further.

I love these kinds of mystery movies where you have to guess for a long time how things really stand. If

quite often than not, the final reveal turns out to be a bit of a disappointment. But have you in the meantime

I sat watching an enigmatic film, captivated. In which the increasingly desperate Jean

Simmons is eventually assisted by a helpful Bogarde, now in a smoother role.

as much as I am usually used to from him. (I find many of his roles rather stiff). Despite

that generally little spectacular happens, it is primarily the cast across the board that

keeps the film afloat, and the film continuously maintains a lurking, ominous atmosphere.

Incidentally, I initially thought of Polanski's film Frantic for a moment. Also in Paris, by the way.

I can certainly agree with Clara regarding the plot and the final conclusion; it is quite a disappointment and actually rather unbelievable how something like this is handled.

It is an originally conceived ending, but rather far-fetched in its execution, to put it mildly.

Still, overall I did enjoy this film; the atmosphere is great and the setting is very beautiful.
