The book by Françoise Sagan caused a stir at the time, but a film version of it is not so obvious, as this film proves, which is actually more boring than anything else.

After all, the whole thing comes across as very artificial with a lot of superficial talk and can't really captivate at any time.

Actors like David Niven and Deborah Kerr belong in better films and chansonnière Juliette Greco was only there for the poster.

Bonjour Tristesse was not warmly received by the American public and was considered too little 'French', while it was just as successful in France. Truffaut was a big fan of Seberg and called her the best actress in Europe, while Godard saw his A Bout de Souffle as a continuation of Seberg's character. So you can see how the flavors can differ.

The film starts wonderfully in black and white with the necessary sadness. The colors and the atmosphere ensure that the story, despite all the fun, comes across as rather depressing. To then look back to the colorful summer, when everything was still going well. The characters sometimes seem quite fake, but that's actually part of the film. David Niven as the eternal playboy and Jean Seberg as his daughter in a coming-to-age story who surfs on her father's pleasure, before she realizes too late that this way of life is not the greatest happiness. In addition, we get Deborah Kerr who also feels like an intruder and then Mylène Demongeot in a bizarre role that is reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe. And yet also mention the running gag of the waitress, where the actress apparently always plays one of her sisters who is on duty at that moment.

In terms of story, it is quite simple and yet the film has something special. The music by Juliette Gréco (who plays herself as a singer) and the strong ending with Seberg provide the necessary emotion. A film that, remarkably enough, lingers much more than I expected.
