Doris Blake is a fashion model for New York women's clothing. When her boyfriend, Jimmie Martin, who is a car mechanic by trade, proposes to her, she decides to wait until they have more money. She doesn't want to live like her family does; without ambition and living in a full house without any privacy. When Jimmie takes a job as a driver for a wealthy woman named Claire, who has everything but a husband, things get too much for Doris. She feels that her husband-to-be has no ambition. While at a fashion show, Doris meets Eric Nelson, a man who is nearly divorced. Doris spends evenings with him for a while. Doris' father tells this to Jimmie, who marries Claire out of sheer anger. But both know that he still loves Doris. Eric and Doris are mainly concerned with gambling and drinking.
