As one of the few films by Soderbergh I thought this was doable. Or maybe I always just pick out the wrong ones. Loved these eyes, nice use of colors and tight camera work. The soundtrack is also quite strong. The first half hour was quite enjoyable. In terms of plot, the criticism of the medicinal world and the entanglement of interests is a bit too thick in the beginning, but I think that's an interesting enough starting point. It's all so semi-corrupt. Unfortunately, the film doesn't seem to be much about that.

When the plot takes over , the film becomes considerably weaker. Rather far-fetched, contrived and coincidental all and the motivations don't really come through. Especially Rooney Mara, who voluntarily had himself locked up in a mental institution for some money (while Zeta-Jones was clearly not short of money already) didn't really appeal to me. And it's also a shame that those soggy moments creep in like at the end where Law does pick up that stepson from school. All's well that ends well..

I have to say that it is also very doable and above all looks stylish and is reasonably interesting in terms of direction, but also suffers from defects.

3*

The beginning of this movie was hard, I got into it hard. Halfway through, the film gets going better as the 'conspiracy' becomes clearer. From that moment on, your attention is held, which is difficult in the first half hour.

The story is original in plot/idea but quite far-fetched and as a film here and there not cleverly put together. The theme could have been developed much better in a first-class thriller, but it gets stuck in too many vagueness or casualness, superficiality and too fast and also vague plot changes that even made me lose the thread towards the end.

I also found the ending to be a bit too easy.

Classy actors Jude Law, Rooney Mara and Catherina Zeta Jones do their best but are too limited by the mediocre script. Movie reminds me of a poorly filmed book.

Movie could have been more. But was worth watching.

“Depression is an inability to construct a future.”

Interesting film by Soderbergh. Side Effects is based on the conflicts between the characters, only to throw in some twists afterwards. Soderbergh misleads the viewer a number of times, but does so without losing his grip on the plot and the characters. You see them at their worst, and each character ends up trying to outsmart the other. Very well played by Law, Mara and Zeta-Jones. As we are used to from Soderbergh, Side Effects visually looks beautiful again, and the smooth direction ensures that the film also looks good.
