"Universal's Motion Picture Triumph!"
Magnolia, the daughter of Captain Andy Hawks and his domineering wife Parthenia "Parthy" Ann, enjoys her childhood aboard her father's showboat. Parthy is annoyed by the alleged influence of 'leading lady' Julie, who is also Magnolia's idol and best friend. She fires Julie, despite the objections of her husband and Magnolia. Many years later, Magnolia, now a young woman, becomes the leading lady on board. Magnolia falls in love with the gambler Gaylord Ravenal, who regularly visits the showboat.
