The old lady Lillian Huckle, (Peggy Ashcroft) was locked up in a mental institution in her youth because she did not want to conform to the female role that was imposed on her. Now, after sixty, she is released and taken into the family of her great-nephew and his wife, Hugh and Harriet Ambrose. For Harriet, the arrival of Lillian turns out to be the liberation of her conservative husband.
