Shan Qing Shui Xiu plot

In a remote village amidst beautiful forests, mountains and lakes, Ah Shui, a poor young farmer (played by the director himself), tries to provide for his family. His little sister goes to school, which costs a lot of money. When his younger brother is subsequently sentenced to the death penalty and this sentence can be commuted to life imprisonment for a huge sum of money, the financial worries of Ah Shui, who also has a pregnant wife, grow over his head. The conflicting advice of his sister's inveterate communist teacher and the strict Christian traveling pastor don't make things any easier, but they agree on one thing: the sister has to go to the big city to earn money. Ah Shui follows their advice and immediately signs a contract in the city for the sale of his unborn child.
