Sham plot
The wealthy Katherine Van Riper has expensive taste, which she inherited from her father. When he dies, he leaves her sky-high bills, but no means by which Katherine can pay them. No one wants to give her credit, not even her wealthy aunts Bella and Louisa, because they want Katherine to marry Monte, the tall and wealthy son of oil baron Jeremiah Buck. However, Katherine is in love with Tom Jaffery, one of Buck's employees, but she knows he could never keep up with her lifestyle. As her financial situation becomes increasingly dire, Katherine realizes that marrying Monte is also becoming impossible. When she finally decides to sell the famous Van Riper pearls, Katherine discovers that her father had already sold the pearls and replaced them with fakes.
