A sailor walks through the harbor looking for a prostitute. He meets Maija, a woman marked by life who left her island and was forced to look for work in the dark part of Helsinki. Maija, dumped by her boyfriend, has worked as a waitress in bars and nightclubs and eventually ended up in prostitution. Her past has seen many unfortunate encounters with wrong men who have taken advantage of her naivety and innocence.
