Extremely dry road trip film by Aki Kaurismäki. I liked this second film a little less than The Match Factory Girl, but it was still a different but entertaining hour of viewing. Entertaining because of the incredibly dryness, mainly. The film starts when Valto runs out of coffee. Angry, he locks his mother up and embarks on a road trip with his friend Reino, the garage owner, also middle-aged and not too satisfied with his life. We then mostly see Valto and friend, and their picked up traveling companions Tatiana and Klaudia, who are skillfully ignored for a whole journey by the ultra-stiff Finns, who never utter a word too many. To finally thaw, without mincing words, by taking Klaudia to the station, after which Reino stays behind with Tatiana in Tallinn - and after which Valto is left alone and mourning. Really a joke is almost invisible, vicarious shame even more so, and yet I watched with a smile and certainly at the end with some pity.

Great black and white film in which the two Russian ladies are rudely ignored for a large part of the road trip. The movie kept me glued to the screen from the first to the last minute. I enjoyed all kinds of old utensils, which were often very rickety, such as a shaking record player for the car, a 12-volt coffee maker and Husqvarna sewing machine, etc. Seeing all those attributes in operation gave me many moments of laughter.

Ha, those two dry stubbles on the road to nowhere who meet two women along the way. They do everything they can to ensure that this does not happen again, but somehow the women remain intrigued by those two 'stupid' Finns.

One addicted to coffee, the other to vodka. It's amazing how that person in that bar downs an entire bottle in two gulps. A little later he stands there arguing with someone and imitates how to rumble. That failed miserably. Awesome!

A one hour video. That doesn't have to be anything more and Kaurismäki understands the art of less is more. Anything extra would be perceived as boring or pointless. Beautiful soundtrack too, some rock & roll. An absurd tragicomedy without any joke, but contextually very funny.
