Samt al Rai plot
It is 2003, Baghdad has fallen. In a village on the edge of the desert in southern Iraq, the men celebrate. The women wail as if there is a dead person to mourn. It is the start of a poetic and critical story about tradition, honor and appearances. Fifteen years earlier, on a morning like any other, 13-year-old Zahra is sent out to fetch water. Twenties Saoud leaves for the city. Neither one returns. The unmentionable conclusion is quickly drawn and casts a shadow over the village.
