Hedy Lamarr was referred to by 'connoisseurs' at the time as “the most beautiful woman in films”. Acting has never been her forte, but because of her enchanting beauty, Lamarr is perfectly cast as the seductive, treacherous and vengeful Delilah. Moreover, there is a wonderful chemistry between her and the robust Victor Mature in the other title role. And finally there is George Sanders, who skillfully portrays a very sardonic Saran of Gaza.

I am not biblical enough to be able to judge the content of the story on its merits, but apart from that, this film is certainly worth watching, thanks to the three protagonists and the beautiful music by Victor Young; despite the sometimes stilted dialogues, the mediocre production design and the bombastic approach of Cecil B. DeMille.

In this biblical spectacle, Cecil B. DeMille used large-scale staging with many extras. Actors in the Paramount studio were pasted onto painted backdrops in matte shots. Background projection was a technique used for scenes with a lot of movement. The director can be seen on this set in Sunset Boulevard.

The original story from the book Judges is followed quite faithfully. In skillful editing, shots of Victor Mature and a man in a lion suit are seamlessly alternated with shots of a stuntman and a trained lion. A second climax is the fight with the donkey jawbone. Inside the glowing rod with which they blind Samson was a red neon light. For the apotheosis with the collapsing temple, a miniature was used.

Technicolor lent itself to the use of bright color contrasts. The hero must choose between a blonde and a brunette. Hedy Lamarr wears green and red. With her Oriental appearance, this Austro-Hungarian Jew was perfectly suited for the role of historical femme fatale. Edith Head designed a suit made of peacock feathers. There are fine supporting roles for George Sanders and Angela Lansbury.

The Philistine helmets are based on reliefs from that time. They were one of the first peoples with iron weapons. Willy Vandersteen drew inspiration from this for the Suske en Wiske album De Kale Kapper.
