The life of Sadie McKee Brennan (Joan Crawford) has ups and downs. Sadie's father is a cook for the Alderson family. The son of the house, Michael Alderson (Franchot Tone), is in love with her, but Sadie chooses to run off with her boyfriend Tommy. After Tommy leaves her for a showgirl, Sadie meets Michael's boss, millionaire Jack Brennan, and marries this wealthy alcoholic for his money.
