Canada, 1920. Farmer Kaleb Gare is considered a puritan and an inhuman. He rules ruthlessly over his family, consisting of his wife Amelia and their two daughters, Judith and Ellen. His popularity with the other farmers is at an all-time low. A dark secret from the past binds Amelia to her husband and finds it impossible to free herself from her tyrannical husband. Every day she suffers under his whims. Until one day a young man shows up at the door.
