Doctor Robert Koch is shocked that there is an increasing number of child deaths in the area for which he is responsible and that is why he devotes all his attention to research against the pathogens. He is convinced, notwithstanding many other opinions, that a certain bacillus is the culprit. When he can finally prove his theory, he is invited to Berlin, where he can continue his research undisturbed.
