Weird, unbalanced film where you have the feeling that the direction wanted the Chinese to do this and that, depending on the limited image we have of the Chinese in the West. Fake-looking drama, in which a relationship is made with the Cultural Revolute, in which the lie reigned for the greater good. I thought Gere is persona non grata in China because he has repeatedly opposed China, especially because of Tibet. Gere is Buddhist. That the US embassy would not interfere in the event of a capital crime committed by an American citizen seems very unlikely to me. On the other hand, it seems that Gere does get a lot of liberties during his trial. Likewise his lawyer. And WtF is Heard it through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye at the beginning of the movie?

Red Corner is now 20 years old but still manages to maintain it well. In a changing China, a businessman is accused of murdering his one-night stand. It is mainly around the difference in legal systems that this court thriller wants to score but it is precisely there that it fails. The motives behind the murder remain quite mysterious for a long time and Bai Ling certainly outclasses Gere in her role as his enthusiastic lawyer. When Gere starts to conduct his own defense for a while at the end, I think it goes way over the top and it becomes a laughing matter. I didn't think Red Corner was bad as a thriller, but as a lesson on "justice in China" this is not to be taken seriously at all.

Terrible.

Possibly the worst movie I've seen. What nonsense, for a film that tries to be quite realistic. I have rarely been so annoyed in a movie like this. I don't know what the director was thinking, but yes.

For starters, I really don't understand why people liked Bai Ling so much. One of the greatest failures of all. So exaggerated, so fake, so unconvincing. In addition, she is also insufficiently fluent in English. I'm not a racist, but come on, the rest of the cast speaks it much better.

Gere tries to save the day, but can hardly be taken seriously. That thinking face of his stood out too much. Then, the final in the lawsuit. That the general or whatever just shoots that guy, and runs away too. How do you make it up.. And I don't know how many times you can insult the court and then win the case too. And then that goodbye to Ling and Gere. Just laughable, are you telling me you're going to read some kind of poem as a goodbye? Pft.

Ridiculous movie. Worst of the worst. Skip this shit.
