You may wonder whether it is wise to make a remake of a classic by Alfred Hitchcock. Daphne du Maurier's exciting novel lends itself very well to film adaptation, but with remakes you automatically compare. Then this film falls grossly short of the 1940 masterpiece; one of Hitchcock's best movies.

That goes not only for the tension level, but for the acting across the board. Kristin Scott Thomas may have looked closely at the stylish, extremely cold rendition of Judith Anderson in the Hitchcock version, but she can't come close to that. Mutatis mutandis, the same goes for Lily James and Armie Hammer compared to the sublime roles of Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier respectively.

Not easy to make a remake of a Hitchcock film. Still a type of director with a well-known stamp on his films and quite a talented man when it comes to suspense. Rebecca's story (like other of his films) is based on a book. The basis remains a good story and that also comes to the fore here. But the 1940 film also received the necessary film awards. Its fame makes it hard not to compare the films.

This Rebecca from 2020 was beautifully filmed, the setting in a beautiful castle, necessary costuming and such. And with 2 main actors who are not bad in themselves. But the film lacks a soul, the tension doesn't really come to the fore and both actors have played better roles. Thanks to the budget and the big names behind this title, it is still quite pleasant to watch, but it is also no more than average. Too bad, because this has quite potential. Or does this show once again that the talents of, among others, Hitchcock and actors Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier are still underestimated? Not to mention the cinematography at the time that could cash in on one of the Oscars.

No chance given the much better performance of the original version by Hitchcock. People speak of atmosphere here, but that is nothing compared to that of Hitchcock. Little salty. Of course the beautiful locations do contribute and the cast does a good job, but the story has too long a run-up that offers no added value and there is no question of tension. Towards the end, the film goes out like a candle. 5/10
