No one doubts that lawyer Jennifer (Jaclyn Smith)'s child is an adopted child, but in reality it was conceived by Adam (Ken Howard), America's new vice president. The latter is being blackmailed by James (Michael Nouri), whose brother was killed in an attack on the president. James, in turn, is secretly in love with Jennifer.
