In 1850, the United States Congress passed a law stipulating that anyone helping a fugitive slave would be severely punished. Since the Northern states can no longer be a safe haven for escaped slaves, they move to Canada. Driven by a shared aversion to slavery, several courageous people, white and black, set up an escape route: The Underground Railroad.
