Pura Handa Kaluwara plot

Purahanda Kaluwara (Death on a Full Moon Day) shows how the rural population in Sri Lanka is affected by the civil war between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamils. The son of Wannihami, an old blind man living in rural poverty, forced to participate in the civil war. The army offers the only chance of a reasonable salary. On the full moon day, a day that should be nonviolent according to Buddhist tradition, the dead body of Wannihami's son arrives in the village. The old man refuses to sign the government papers, which entitle the family to compensation. This puts him under pressure from both the government and his environment, who are blinded by the desperate poverty.
