1888: A violin maker, Vedder (Gijs Scholten van Aschat), is forced to leave his house, opposite the recently completed Central Station of Amsterdam, to make way for the planned Victoria Hotel. His nephew Anijs (Jacob Derwig), pharmacist in Hoogeveen, has gotten himself into trouble due to unauthorized medical action and is looking for a way out, for himself and his wife Martha (Rifka Lodeizen), but also for a group of poor peat cutters whom he wants a future for. America promises. Passionate - or is it pride? - the two devise a plan to get the most out of it.

A nice story, but a little shaky.
There were occasionally some irrelevant scenes in it, but the entire decoration in terms of decors and clothing looked very nice and well-kept.
Very credible acting and a pleasure to watch Amsterdam in 1888.
As an Amsterdammer, you've never been inside, so you'll soon have to take a look at the Victoria Hotel!

What a start to the film, too retarded for words. Contributes absolutely nothing to the film, purely again to shock and totally unrealistic. I think as a father you do everything you can to prevent this, even if it costs your own life. Okay, let's not get too off topic. Acting is reasonable, only see as a historian many misses. I would like to give 4 stars but due to the crazy start and the misses I am giving 2 stars.

Very mediocre movie. The acting and images of Amsterdam in the 19th century are fine, but the plot is below par. The film unfortunately leaves me completely cold, the plot does not arouse any sympathy. Two and a half stars for Public Works, a moderate five.
