Alice Rémon, a saleswoman in a pharmacy, used to be a prostitute and managed to leave her milieu by marrying a worker. But one day the man dies and he turns out to be poisoned. Her mother-in-law, who hates her, accuses her of murder. All suspicions point to Alice, so she is convicted and locked up in jail. Yet she clings to her innocence.
