The film tells the story of the Boteros, a Mexican family struggling with poverty after the death of their father. Ignacia is the mother, a desperate woman who chooses to risk the future of her three oldest children in order to protect the youngest, Gabriel. She thinks Gabriel will make it in life and help them out of poverty.
