It used to be very common for children of prostitutes to grow up with their mothers in a brothel and to be taught the values and norms of their environment. Polly Platt, Peter Bogdanovich's ex, wrote a story about this, which served as the basis for this film by Louis Malle. As a specialist in children's films(Au Revoir, Les Enfants), Malle turned it into a beautiful, realistic-looking film, which I found anything but shocking.

I regularly read comments in this forum from people who jubilantly tumble over each other because of the lavish, gory explosions of violence in films by Tarantino and associates. It is difficult for me to understand that people then complain about the subdued way in which Malle depicts the naked body of a young girl for a few seconds at the most.

Louis Malle tackles a controversial subject here: the red light district in New Orleans, which was abolished in 1917. Officially this neighborhood was called The District, but popularly it was Storyville. EJ Bellocq, played here by Keith Carradine, was real. He photographed the girls of easy virtue. The "madam" is based on Lulu White, the Mahogany Hall brothel keeper who was not averse to a dash of cocaine. Storyville was also a tolerance zone when it came to drugs. The Professor (Antonio Fargas) is based on the pianist Tony Jackson. He mainly played ragtime and wrote the song Pretty Baby. New Orleans was at the cradle of jazz, with greats such as Louis Armstrong and Jerry Roll Morton.

Brooke Shields plays a child of a prostitute (Susan Sarandon) who grows up in this environment. The photographer plays an ambiguous role in her life. The result is a controversial but successful portrait of a forgotten piece of American history. A nice bonus is the attention to photography from that time.

Good film about a girl who grows up with her mother in a brothel. The film is set during the First World War. The film sometimes lacks a bit of direction, but the ins and outs of the brothel through the eyes of a young girl are well portrayed. To say the least, a daring role for a too young Brooke Shields (something that would absolutely not be possible nowadays). A small 3.5 stars.
