Portrait from Life plot
German professor Franz Menzel sees a portrait of a young lady in an art gallery who looks exactly like his daughter Hildegarde, who was presumed to have died during World War II. Hildegarde turns out to be alive and lives in the Eastern Bloc under the name Lidia. She suffers from amnesia. Hildegarde now lives with the former Nazi leader Fritz Kottler Hendlemann. British Army Major Lawrence does everything in his power to get Hildegarde to the West.
