A serious illness destroys Karen Viljoen's life as a happily married rich man's wife. The discovery that she suffers from leprosy is just the beginning of her torments. As she struggles with her illness at Westford Hospital, her husband Otto finds comfort in his secretary. When her son is also taken from her, everything becomes too much for her and the news brings her to the edge of a nervous breakdown. Her doctor Tertius Louw returns just in time. Months later, Karen leaves the hospital, relieved of her illness but not of a stigma. Rejected by the community and by Otto, she decides to return to Westford - to Tertius and her 'spot in the sun'.
