Unlike his cheerful, outgoing friends and peers, eight-year-old Brian Reynolds is a shy, morose and withdrawn boy. Curious teenager Nancy Parks notices this and learns that the boy owes his attitude to his divorced and stressed mother, who occasionally takes her frustrations out with a beating. Knowing Brian's distress, Nancy wonders exactly what to do with the situation.
