In the Bahamas during World War II, British playboy Alfred de Marigny courts and eventually marries the daughter of the wealthy Sir Harry Oakes. In the years that follow, de Marigny manages to annoy the Duke of Windsor, who is the governor of the Bahamas, also alienates himself from the local entrepreneurs and infuriates a group of mobsters who want to set up a casino in Nassau. When Sir Harry Oakes is murdered, Alfred de Marigny is the prime suspect.
