Os Inconfidentes plot
Brazil, 16th century. Corporal Tiradentes, together with a group of intellectuals, plans the overthrow of the colonial Portuguese government. But an informant can inform the governor about the uprising, which leads to the entire group being rounded up and sent to jail. Now they have a choice: swear allegiance to the current rulers or undergo torture with almost certain death as a result.
