Once upon a Time... When We Were Colored plot
1946, Mississippi. He is born the son of a slave girl in a cornfield. She is unmarried, but a black businessman is willing to marry her. The boy grows up while blacks have to stand up for themselves, and a white lady lends him books from the library so he can learn more about the world.
