A man invites his friend and family for his birthday to a remote house in Sweden. Then a nuclear war breaks out far away in Europe. (A theme that fits perfectly with the year 1986) This was his last film and a film I had never seen before. I know a lot of Tarkovsky's other films very well. There is another noop of mystery and symbolism in this film as well. His slow style of filming with often beautiful images and beautiful lighting is also very recognizable. But I still thought it was a bit of a lesser film. The first part mainly consists of dialogues like a play full of wise words and philosophies. Only when a voice on TV says that a nuclear war is taking place in Europe does the film start to get a bit of a story. Although fortunately it all still goes on Tarkovsky's way. But I found other older films to go deeper than this one. I'll definitely have to see him again later to see if I stick with that opinion.

For me the most accessible Tarovsky film so far, in any case much better to follow than Stalker and Andrei Rublev. Especially because the setting here is small and the story is not very complicated, what it entails is of course different. From the moment the news item is on TV, the "cozy" atmosphere in the house changes, and you see how everyone with handle this situation. Read here and there that this looks like films by Ingmar Bergman, never seen a film of it so can start again!

I did not find Tarkovsky's that very accessible either. The game starts very slowly and especially the first hour is a succession of dialogues with deeper layers and meanings. The plot is not complicated, so that makes a difference, but the setting around it can intrigue you or not. Unfortunately for me it was the last.

It also all seems very drawn out and the sober use of camera ditto static images does not really help. Only after an hour happens what the plot is about. Not so spectacular, but effective. Also effective for the main character, who from now on puts his hands and faith in God, so that he decides to give a drastic turn to his life.

Other than that, beautifully shot images, a bit desolate and even desolate. Not Tarkovsky's best in my eyes, but nice to see and think about.
