Nosedive plot

In 'Nosedive', Lacie Pound (Bryce Dallas Howard) is someone who seems to live for her score. She has a 4.2 on a scale of 5 and lives with her brother (who doesn't care about his score). She would like to live alone and has a beautiful house in mind. The problem is that she can only get that house if she has at least a 4.5. She goes the extra mile to make it happen as quickly as possible and is very happy when an old friend, Naomi (Alice Eve) with a score of 4.8, invites her as a witness to her wedding. If she does well there she would soon reach 4.5.

Like the other stories I've already seen from Black Mirror, Nosedive has an excellent starting point. Today you think it's all about social media and the meaningless likes on it
Facebook and other channels. This Nosedive takes it a step further when these ratings are linked to certain social and financial benefits or rights. For example, you will be denied access or privilege if you do not meet the minimum standard. Some nice examples (the house, the car, the airport, the party, etc ...). Creepy already and pathetic at the same time when you have to deny yourself, free speech hardly exists anymore and all because the most important thing in your life is your rating.

Highly magnified of course in Nosedive, satirical also at times and it is something to think about. In the end, “my rating” is only mediocre. The ending ruined a lot. The story was interesting to follow, but very predictable. The downward spiral was over the top and the wedding was quite disappointing. The conversation (or swearing) with the man in prison was supposed to reflect free speech, but was drawn purely into the ridiculous. Weak ending unfortunately...

Behind the hysterically happy smile of Lacie Pound (Bryce Dallas Howard) is a sad person trapped in that harsh like culture. Especially merciless to women. Lacie really wants to break free and be herself, but any misstep could easily earn her a negative score. And that desirable world, where only the privileged dwell, continues to beckon. Then Lacie gets a chance to raise her status when she is invited by a childhood friend (in a disarming moment) to a wedding among the beau monde. Like up guaranteed! Unlike other episodes of Black Mirror, 'Nosedive' (2016) actually has no horror or thriller elements. It is more of a traditional comedy of errors, in which a perfectionist protagonist is forced to face the fact that life cannot be controlled. What I love about this episode is that this fictional world - because of the warm colors, the costume design and the social etiquette shown - is more like the fifties than the new millennium. Technology not as a progressive step forward, but rather a regression to times when social norms and gender relations were still unshakable.

Nice.

Yet another episode that once again shows why I'm going to find Black Mirror more and more interesting. Not so much that every episode is so fantastic, but it is episodes like this that indeed serve as a kind of reflection and can therefore "be" extra relevant.

I'm not normally a big fan of Howard, but here she's really cut out for her role. That sometimes seems really nice to shine through. Nice and irritating at times, a charming look and a cute smile. That smile sometimes really finishes it off in a kind of desperate look.

The film is smooth, you are through the hour in no time. It's extremely interesting how that rating system works and that's why you actually keep watching. It is of course a kind of image that Social Media should not get out of hand, but yes. As a viewer you can notice that yourself.

For the rest, the future looks good

Rim out. Nice and sunny and fruity, which contributes well to the atmosphere. It is sometimes a bit predictable unfortunately, but that doesn't matter because when you look at BM there is always a little surprise in it. And here too, sports fan.

A better BM episode for me so far. Definitely one I'd like to watch.
