A film that, I believe, decisively highlights the complexities of racial mixing and cohesion in the same locations. Unlike many other films, this time it's the immigrants who have made it in a foreign country, and this time it's the natives, from a lower social class, who are intolerantly defending themselves. While the film also makes it clear that no matter who's in charge, taking advantage of and exploiting others is never far away.

Anyway, the film doesn't hit the mark enough.

A good film about a British Pakistani whose uncle allows him to run a laundromat. A beautiful period piece, undoubtedly progressive at the time due to its racism and, not least, its love for men. It's presented without any embellishment, but apart from the ending, the film sometimes lacks impact. Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't disappoint in one of his early roles. Easily 3.5 stars.

A portrait of a Pakistani immigrant family trying to make it in London but becoming disillusioned as life in England tears their family apart. Entrepreneurship, traditions versus modernity, integration, homosexuality, racism... Various themes run through the film, but none truly resonate.

I was also disappointed by the messy editing, where scenes jump haphazardly from one topic to another. Storylines like the one involving the uncle's mistress and the cousin who deals drugs further diminished my interest. Daniel Day-Lewis plays his first leading role in a film here as Omar's friend and lover. My Beautiful Laundrette struck me as a strangely cohesive whole.
