Mr. Barnes of New York plot
A British naval officer kills a young Corsican man in a duel. His sister, Marina Paoli, vows revenge on the perpetrator. Mr. Barnes, from New York, witnesses the duel. He sees the name "Gerard Anstruther" engraved on the pistols. A few years later, Mr. Barnes meets Enid, Gerard's sister, in Nice. He learns that Gerard is engaged to Marina, who nursed him for an illness in Egypt. After the wedding, Marina's guardian tells him that Gerard is the man she is looking for. Mr. Barnes is able to save him in time. Gerard explains that he had lent his pistols for the duel. Enid and Mr. Barnes eventually marry.
