Polyakov (Leonid Bitchevin) has left the capital during an extremely turbulent period, the revolution of 1917. On the first night, he undergoes the first real test of his craftsmanship, but he does not manage to save a man's life. To cope with his first encounter with real life, as well as for his own health, the doctor gives himself a dose of morphine. More doses will follow soon, when he performs his first amputation, tracheotomy and so on. What was intended as a temporary aid to overcoming difficulties quickly becomes an addiction.
