Matrubhoomi: A Nation without Women plot

A woman gives birth in a small village in India. When the father hears the cry of the child, he wants to give the good news to the villagers as soon as possible. But when the midwife announces that the child is a daughter, there is a startled silence. Shortly afterwards, the father takes the baby and drowns her in milk. This practice continues with the result that many years later there are men and boys everywhere and no women. A widower, Ramsharan, ponders his fate and that of his two grown sons who are unable to marry. There has been no marriage in this village for 15 years.
