Agnes (Molly Parker), an attractive young woman with a troubled past, returns to her native Cape Breton village to care for their seriously ill mother with her two sisters. Immediately upon arrival, a cat and mouse game begins between the sisters, who have grown apart due to family secrets. It also immediately becomes clear that Agnes appears stronger and happier than she really is. With her return, Agnes finally wants to deal with some painful things from the past. But in the house full of family secrets, her extreme self-destructive behavior initially has just the opposite effect. Behind Agnes' struggles with booze hides much greater torments. Just as behind her sister Theresa's bitterness hides an enormous defeat at her failed marriage. Just like their boyish sister Louise hides behind the TV for want of a real life. However, Agnes' painful quest eventually sets in motion a series of events that lead all three sisters to find themselves and each other.
