The Austrian Empress Maria Theresa introduced compulsory education, the abolition of torture, ended serfdom and introduced a number of other legal reforms. Not only did she fundamentally change her land, but it steadily increased in size and she gave the empire with her husband Franz Stephan of Lorraine, sixteen descendants.
