In Love Affair, or The Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator, Makavejev examines the human erotic desire in an essayistic way. Makaveyev begins with the simple fact of a romance between a telephone operator and a sewage treatment engineer against the backdrop of turbulent Yugoslav political developments, then complicates matters dramatically with the addition of lectures by a sexologist, an account of the evolving rat population and the autopsy of the main character.
