Le Nombril du Monde plot

1939. Bearing in mind that God has not given equal opportunities to everyone, Bajou is determined to become a high-ranking person at all costs. He leaves his hometown and moves to the capital, Tunis, to work as a bookkeeper for an important flour manufacturer. He is capable of anything to achieve his goal, betrays his employer and robs him of his possessions. Then Germany declares war on France and the German troops invade Tunis. When the city is liberated a few years later, Bajou finds the girl Habiba, the daughter of Scali, an influential person in the city. He decides to marry her. Her father refuses at first, but he is ruined and because Bajou has become rich in the meantime, he finally gives in. However, Bajou's mother was humiliated by Scali years earlier and wants revenge.
