The wanderer and adventurer August is a charming trader and fantasist who knows "life" and who captivates the naive, ignorant country people with his fantastic stories. For example, he wins over the young Edevart, a farmer's son whom he convinces that real life is on the other side of the fjords. He takes Edevart with him and together they experience all kinds of adventures. Gradually, however, Edevart realizes that his friend August is a fraud and he goes his own way. Then Edevart meets the married Lovise Magrete, who has to survive alone with her two children on a sheep farm, because her husband has moved to America to earn money. Edevart falls in love with her, and although she also has feelings for him, she remains faithful to her husband. He goes to live with her and becomes a grown man there. However, problems arise when one day her husband returns from America.
