Lady Audley's Secret plot
When her husband, George, suddenly leaves for Australia to look for work, Helen Talboys, unaware of his whereabouts, believes he has abandoned her and marries an aristocrat to become Lady Audley. When her doppelganger chambermaid dies, Lady Audley cleverly passes the corpse off as Helen Talboys to avoid potential bigamy charges. Having made his fortune in gold, George returns from Australia and accidentally encounters his wife at her stepson's villa. He is determined to win her back.
